The E550 is essentially the same camera as the FinePix F810 (see note below) in a less expensive plastic body, and without the widescreen LCD or 16:9 shooting mode, AA batteries instead of a Li-Ion pack and USB 1.1 rather than 2.0. The E550's sensor is the fourth generation of the now well-established Super CCD technology, offering 12.3MP output from 6.3 million effective pixels. Like the F810 the new camera offers a 4x optical zoom (32.5-130mm equiv.), fast operation and a fairly comprehensive array of manual controls in a compact, traditionally-styled body. Newly-developed 1/1.7- inch Super CCD HR sensor with 6.3 million effective pixels (delivering 12.3 million recorded pixels) Wide angle 4x optical zoom lens (32.5mm - 130mm equiv.) High resolution 2.0-inch LCD Full range of exposure controls (P/S/A/M) Wide range of ISO settings (80/100/200/400/800) VGA movie recording at 30 fps with sound RAW file format Fast start-up and operation Important note This review is an adaptation of the previously published Fujifilm FinePix F810 review . The E550 Zoom shares an identical lens/sensor (this is a single sealed unit) and image processor as the F810 Zoom, and is functionally identical save for external differences and the lack of a widescreen mode or USB 2. The differences are shown below. Our tests revealed that the E550 produced identical results to the F810 under all circumstances, so some sections of this review - including some (though not all) of the image quality tests - feature results from the F810, not the E550. Wherever this is the case the review notes will make it clear. Conclusion / Recommendation / Ratings are based on the opinion of the reviewer, you should read the ENTIRE review before coming to your own conclusions. Images which can be viewed at a larger size have a small magnifying glass icon in the bottom right corner of the image, clicking on the image will display a larger (typically VGA) image in a new window. To navigate the review simply use the next / previous page buttons, to jump to a particular section either pick the section from the drop down or select it from the navigation bar at the top. DPReview calibrate their monitors using Color Vision OptiCal at the (fairly well accepted) PC normal gamma 2.2, this means that on our monitors we can make out the difference between all of the (computer generated) grayscale blocks below. We recommend to make the most of this review you should be able to see the difference (at least) between X,Y and Z and ideally A,B and C.
